6 Top Tips To Reduce Household Waste During The Lockdown

We all generate more waste than we should at home, and with lockdown in full swing the rate at which we generate waste has only been amplified. Each and every meal is being cooked and eaten at home, we’re ordering all sorts of weird and wonderful products right to our doorsteps and, after yet another Grand Designs binge, we’re probably attempting some sort of home or garden renovation project to keep ourselves busy.

If this sounds like you, we’ve got 6 top tips to help you keep your waste to a minimum during these strange times.

Household waste organised in recycle box

Use reusable cleaning cloths

There’s only so much cleaning you can do during lockdown. Whether it’s trying to make sure your dishes are absolutely sparkling or you want your kitchen surfaces to double as a mirror, we’re all guilty of labouring these sorts of tasks.

So, if you’re going to spend a lot of time cleaning, don’t work your way through packets and packets of disposable wipes and sponges – use reusable cloths instead! It’s a small change, but it will make a big difference to both the environment and your bank account in time.

Package-free produce

The next time you’re in the supermarket and see vegetables covered in plastic – avoid it. There is no reason not to buy loose produce, particularly when we’re all encouraged to bring our bags anyway.

Or even better…

Grow your own veg

If you really want to cut down on trips to the shops and help contribute to a greener society, why not try growing your own veg? It could be a great summer project for those with garden space and can be very rewarding – especially when you’re finally able to cook using the fruits of your labour!

Recycle properly

We’ve all got a little extra time on our hands during lockdown, so it makes sense to spend some of that time ensuring that we recycle everything correctly. Look at labels to see what can and can’t be recycled, and be sure to clean out plastic pots before you chuck them in your recycling bin.

Plan your meals

If you really want to cut down on the amount of food waste you produce, start planning your meals. When you know exactly what you’re going to eat and how much you will need of each ingredient, you don’t have to worry about food going off. Better still, you can plan to eat any leftovers the following day for lunch. Economising on food in this way will save you a bit of money too!

No more plastic water bottles

Now we’re all out and about much less, it should be a lot easier to say no to plastic water bottles. Not only will this save you money, but you will be doing landfill sites all over the country a favour.

Reusable water bottles have come a long way too. Whether you want to keep your beverage piping hot or ice-cold, you can do so with a bottle that’s lightweight, durable and, dare we say, trendy! You can get them everywhere these days, so you won’t struggle to find one. Most supermarkets and highstreet shops will have their own version.
