Earn Green Points for Thousands of Pounds in Peterborough

A new incentivisation scheme is underway in Peterborough, put together by Peterborough City Council and Amey – the council’s street cleaning partner. The scheme comes from £165,000 funding provided by the Department of Community and Local Government’s Rewards and Recycling Fund. The scheme looks to hand out a share of £6,000 per four months to residents within districts which are clearly demonstrating their green credentials. These grants are handed out in amounts of £3,000, £2,000 and £1,000, and each amount can be used by the residents in questions to be put towards charity or community groups within their area.

Councillor Gavin Elsey – a cabinet member for digital, waste and street scene at Peterborough City Council – notes that the current recycling rate of 47 per cent of rubbish in Peterborough should, with the help of the scheme, be raised to around 65 per cent by the year 2020. He went on to state “We hope the scheme will help to increase recycling in the city, encourage communities to work together to improve the rates in their areas, and support their local community groups and charities”.

Where is the scheme applicable?

The ‘Love Peterborough: Love your Community Recycling Reward’ scheme is applicable to seven district throughout the Peterborough region, covering a total of 25,000 households. The areas currently include Eye, Thorney, Stanground, Hampton, East, Walton, Paston and North Bretton, but in six months time the scheme will be rolled out to more areas throughout the city.

Residents within the pilot area have been provided with leaflets, letters and an activation code, containing information which explains how they can get involved and start earning green points themselves.

How to accumulate green points

Points can be accumulated through taking part in recycling ‘modules’ ranging from activities such as presenting recycling bins to buying from the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) re-use facility.

Points are built up in each district, and the area which gains the largest number of green points at the end of each four month period will receive the largest share – £3,000 – of the £6,000. This can be awarded to a charity group or project within the district in question; the decision and results of which are voted for by residents in the area. The areas in second and third place at the end of each four month period will receive the two smaller ‘cuts’ of the £6,000, while the top recycling individuals across all regions involved in the scheme will individually receive a £50 voucher.
