  • What can I put in a skip?

You can put a wide range of general waste into a skip, including household rubbish, garden waste, furniture, wood, cardboard, soil, and non-hazardous building materials like bricks and rubble. Skips are ideal for home renovations, garden clearances, and commercial projects where large amounts of waste need to be removed quickly. All items collected will be taken to a licensed waste transfer station where as much material as possible is recycled.

  • What can't I put in a skip?

Certain materials cannot be placed in a skip, including hazardous waste such as asbestos, chemicals, solvents, batteries, tyres, gas cylinders, oil, clinical waste, fluorescent tubes, and electrical appliances (WEEE waste). At Woodford Recycling, we provide specialist hazardous waste disposal services to ensure these items are handled safely and in line with UK environmental regulations. If youโ€™re unsure what you can put in your skip, simply contact our friendly team for clear advice and safe alternatives.

  • What are the measurements of a skip?

At Woodford Recycling, we have many different skip sizes available to help everyone tackle their waste. Itโ€™s always important to know the dimensions and measurements of skips to ensure you can fit one on your road or property. Take a look at our Skip Size Guide to find out more.

To learn about the dimensions and capacities of our main skip types, see our simple skip size guide on this page orย contact us todayย and weโ€™ll be happy to advise you.

  • What size skip do I need?

Getting the right skip size means saving yourself a lot of hassle; if itโ€™s too big then youโ€™ve wasted money, and if itโ€™s too small it means youโ€™ll have to hire a second skip.

To help you find the right skip size for your project, weโ€™ve made some handy skip size graphics which you can find on this page. They provide details of roughly how many bags of waste each skip can hold to give you a good idea of what you need.

Generally, the skips you see on roads for domestic use will tend to be 6-yard skips, but here are a few examples of projects you can carry out using our variety of skip sizes:

    • 4-yard skip
Our smallest skip is great for home projects like a small kitchen or bathroom refurbishment and holds approximately 30-40 bags.
    • 6-yard skip
The most common skip, itโ€™s perfect for any medium size projects at home and holds approximately 50-60 bags
    • 8-yard skip
Sometimes known as a buildersโ€™ skip, it can take rubble as well as waste from clearance projects for businesses. It holds approximately 60-80 bags.
    • 12-yard skip
Used for large home or office clearances as well as for bulky refurbishment projects. Holds approximately 100-120 bags but may not be appropriate for heavy waste such as concrete and soil due to weight restrictions.
    • 16-yard skip
Our largest standard skip size, it holds 140-160 bags of waste but can be ideal for removing large items of furniture, equipment or machinery.
  • How long can I hire a skip?

We allow skip hire for up to 21 days for account customers and 7 days for non-account customers.

If you need to keep your skip for longer, thatโ€™s no problem – rental charges will apply after the initial hire period. Want to know more about extended rental or rates? Get in touch with our team and weโ€™ll be happy to help.

  • How do I order a skip?

Ordering a skip from us at Woodford Recycling is simple, just head to Skip Hire and choose your size. Not sure what size you need? Simply call us today and weโ€™ll be happy to help you, regardless of whether you run a commercial business or are a homeowner carrying out DIY.

  • What factors should I consider when choosing the right skip size?

When choosing the right skip size for your needs, you should consider the quantity and type of waste you need to get rid of. For example, if youโ€™re having a clear-out and want to dispose of bulky furniture, this will require a larger skip, possibly something like a 12-yard skip or 16-yard skip.

You should also consider the space available where the skip will be placed.

  • What are the benefits of hiring a larger skip over a smaller one?

Not only is hiring a larger skip cost-effective, but itโ€™s also more convenient as it means you can dispose of all your waste in one go, even bulky items. Youโ€™ve also got peace of mind that you wonโ€™t incur any additional charges for overfilling your skip.

  • Do I need a permit to place a skip on public land?

Yes, if youโ€™re planning to place your skip on a public road then you will require a permit from your local council; otherwise, you could be fined up to ยฃ1,000. When you work with Woodford Recycling, our team can arrange this for you so you donโ€™t need to worry about any paperwork.

  • What should I do if my skip is too small?

If you find that your skip is too small,ย get in touch with us and see how we can help – we may be able to arrange a swift collection or arrange for a larger skip to be delivered.
